Methane in surface waters of the Arabian Sea

چکیده
More than 2000 measurements of atmospheric and dissolved methane (CH4) were performed in the central and northwestern Arabian Sea as part of the German JGOFS Arabian Sea Process Study during three cruises in March, May/June, and June/July 1997. Mean CH4 saturations in the surface waters of the central Arabian Sea were in the range of 103-107%. Significantly enhanced saturations were observed in the coastal upwelling area at the coast of Oman (up to 156%) and in an upwelling filament (up to 145%). The CH4 surface concentrations in the upwelling area were negatively correlated to sea surface temperatures. Areaweighted, seasonally adjusted estimates of the sea-air fluxes of CH 4 gave annual emissions from the Arabian Sea of 11-20 Gg CH4, suggesting that previously reported very high surface CH4 concentrations might be atypical owing to the interannual variability of the Arabian Sea and that the emissions derived from them are probably overestimates.

Stock identification of Arabian yellow fin Sea bream (Acanthopagrus arabicus) by using shape of otolith in the Northern Persian Gulf &Oman Sea
Analysis of the shape properties of fish otolith is one way to identify stocks of different species in the marine environment. Length, width, area, perimeter, form factor, aspect ratio, roundness, circularity, ellipticity and rectangularity analyses of otoliths were undertaken to assess patterns of spatial and temporal stock structure of a wide-ranging fish, the Arabian yellow fin sea bream Aca...

متن کاملMonthly variability in surface pCO2 and net air-sea CO2 flux in the Arabian Sea
[1] Recent studies on biogeochemical cycling of carbon in the Arabian Sea, by Joint Global Ocean Flux Study (JGOFS), revealed that the Arabian Sea is a perennial source of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere. The surface pCO2 is governed by physical processes such as water mass transports, upwelling and winter convective mixing, and associated biological processes. Hence surface pCO2 distribution ...
متن کاملEffects of composition of labile organic matter on biogenic production of methane in the coastal sediments of the Arabian Sea.
Coastal regions are potential zones for production of methane which could be governed by ecological/environmental differences or even sediment properties of a niche. In order to test the hypothesis that methanogenesis in most marine sediments could be driven more by proteins than by carbohydrates and lipid content of labile organic matter (LOM), incubation experiments were carried out with sedi...
متن کاملGrowth, mortality and yield per recruit of the king soldier bream Argyrops spinifer (Sparidae) from the Oman coast of the Arabian Sea
The King soldier bream Argyrops spinifer at Arabian Sea (Omani waters) was assessed using Beverton and Holt yield per recruit model. A total of 5520 specimens were collected during five trawl surveys between September 2007 and August 2008. The maximum life span was 11 years for length range of 11.0 – 62.1 cm TL. The von Bertalanffy growth parameters were K = 0.22 year-1, L∞ = 65.51 cm, to = -0....
